MNI DATA BRIEF: Sharp Pick Up for UK Manufacturing Outlook:CBI

MNI (London)
LONDON (MNI)

The outlook for UK manufacturing brightened significantly in March, with output volumes rising to the highest level since May 2019 and expectations to their strongest since August 2017, although companies continue to struggle with supply chain disruptions such as higher freight costs and raw material shortages, Anna Leach, CBI Deputy Chief Economist, said Thursday. "Risks to growth in European markets are elevated given the slow pace of vaccine roll-out and the likelihood of further lockdowns." she added.

Total order books improved to -5 in March, up from -24 seen in February, marking the strongest reading since April 2019, according to the CBI's latest Industrial Trends survey. Export order books rose to -20, which is broadly in line with the long-term average. Firms expect output to increase markedly in the next three months. However, due to supply shortages, prices are expected to rise significantly as well.
