UK Prime Minister Liz Truss said she would resign as leader of the Conservative Party and that there would be a leadership election within the next week.

Truss, who has informed Buckingham Palace of her decision to resign, said she would remain in place as caretaker PM until a new leader of the party is elected by party MPs.

The UK is now looking for its fifth Prime Minister in just six years, after Truss, who was the choice of the Conservative Party membership to succeed Boris Johnson, has faced weeks of turmoil following a fiscal statement that was seen as bungled in both delivery and content.
