MNI BRIEF: Ukraine Boosts Inflation Expectations-NY Fed Survey

WASHINGTON (MNI)

U.S. consumers reversed course and upped their inflation expectations in February amid the Ukraine crisis, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey published Monday.

Year-ahead median inflation expectations increased 0.2ppts to 6%, matching the series' high set in November which goes back to 2013, while three-year-ahead median inflation expectations increased 0.3ppts to 3.8%. The increases reverse some of January's declines, and come as some have expressed concern that rising energy costs could further strain consumers' price views.

The New York Fed survey also shows a spike in consumer spending views to a series high, with median year-ahead household spending growth expectations jumping 0.9ppts to 6.4%. The increase came even as households downgraded slightly their views about future income growth.
