MNI BRIEF: US Notched $228B June Budget Deficit, $1.393T YTD

The Treasury Department on Thursday reported a USD1.393 trillion budget deficit in the first nine months of the fiscal year, with a USD228 billion deficit in the month of June.

The monthly deficit was higher by USD139 billion from last June on an unadjusted basis. Receipts in June were USD418 billion, down USD42 billion, or 9%, compared with the year-ago month. Outlays were USD646 billion, up USD96 billion, or 18%, compared with June 2022.

Compared to this point last year, the fiscal year 2023 deficit is up 170%, or USD878 billion, the Treasury said. Receipts are down 11% compared to last year while outlays are up 10%.
