MNI BRIEF: US Record Retailer Imports Seen Through Summer

MNI (Washington)
WASHINGTON (MNI)

Surging retail imports at U.S. ports should continue through at least the end of the summer, the National Retail Federation said Wednesday, as retailers work to meet high consumer demand for goods. Incoming cargo is expected to remain at or above 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units through August, according the NRF's global port tracker, produced jointly with Hackett Associates.

"We've never seen imports at this high a level for such an extended period of time. Records have been broken multiple times and near-record numbers are happening almost every month," NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said in a statement

Monthly imports had previously reached these levels only once, in October 2018. Congestion at U.S. ports driven by the surge is beginning to improve as carriers and port workers adjust to higher import volumes.
