MNI BRIEF: US Treasury Saw USD119B Surplus In January

WASHINGTON (MNI)

The United States clocked a USD119 billion surplus in January, the first monthly surplus since September 2019, while still racking up a USD259 billion deficit in the first four months of the fiscal year, the Treasury Department said Thursday.

The January federal budget surplus came as outlays fell to USD346 billion from USD508 billion in the prior month. The Treasury saw USD466 billion in receipts in January, down USD22 billion from December.

In the first four months of the 2022 fiscal year, the U.S. saw a USD259 billion deficit, a USD477 billion, or 65%, improvement from the prior fiscal year at the same time.
