The Chicago Business Barometer edged up 4.3pt in June with business activity
picking up as shutdowns eased somewhat. However, Covid-19 was again cited as the
major reason for weak levels of production and new orders. Across Q2, business
sentiment slipped 11.8pt to 34.8, hitting the lowest level since Q1 2009.
Production saw the biggest jump in June (33.8), followed by New Orders (29.3)
and Order Backlogs (31.9), while Supplier Deliveries (66.7) and Employment
(31.9) fell, with Employment dropping to the lowest level since Jun 2009. The
majority (55.8%) of respondents plan a hiring freeze for the rest of the year.
