MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Trade Deficit Narrows As EU Exports Recover

The UK trade gap, excluding volatile precious metals, narrowed to GBP9.949 billion May, lifted by a 7.3% increase in exports. Shipments to the EU jumped by 8.0% after stagnating in April, leaving the EU goods trade gap at GBP4.534 billion. Non-EU exports remain slightly higher than shipments to the rest of the world for the fifth straight month, but the gap between EU and non-EU exports has narrowed to just GBP32 million from GBP5.5 billion in January.

Over the first five months of 2021, EU exports have increased by GBP2.8 billion, or 2.8% over the same period of 2020, while imports have increased by GBP400 million of 0.4%.
