MNI DATA IMPACT: Japan May Household Spending Fell 16.2% Y/Y

     TOKYO (MNI) - Average monthly spending per household in Japan dipped
further in May due to the coronavirus disruptions, according to a survey by
Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released on Tuesday.
     --Spending by households with two or more people dropped for the eighth
consecutive month by 16.2% y/y in May, sharper than the previous month's 11.1%
fall. The result came in higher than the MNI survey median which had projected a
12.4% y/y drop. 
     --Spending on food fell 5.4% y/y, slowing down from the previous 6.6% y/y
decrease, but spending on fuel, lighting and water dropped sharply by 5.9% y/y
from the 7.4% y/y gain registered in April.
     --The average real income of households with salaried workers rose 9.8%
y/y, much faster than the 0.9% y/y growth last month. 
     --Household spending declined 0.1% on a monthly basis in May, after
dropping 6.2% y/y in April, marking the third drop in three months.
