MNI: Germany Government Revises Down 2018 GDP Forecast

MNI (London)
By Chris Mc Innes
LONDON (MNI) - The German government expects GDP to grow 2.3% in 2018
according to its latest economic forecast published today. This compares with a
forecast for growth of 2.4% for 2018 outlined in the January round. Meanwhile,
GDP growth for 2019 was upgraded modestly to 2.1%.
Presenting the thrice yearly forecasts, Economy Minister Peter Altmeier
pointed to the soft economic data since the start of the year as the main reason
for the downgrade.
This is is in contrast to the International Monetary Fund, which last week
in the world economic outlook upgraded its 2018 forecast for Germany compared to
its January forecast update.
Despite the downgrade, the overall tone of the forecast publication was
upbeat. According to the government, growth is set to be broad-based with both
domestic and external demand contributing positively.
