MNI BRIEF: Japan Cabinet Ups Industrial View, Cautions On Virus

TOKYO (MNI)

Japan's government cautioned of near-term risks from the spread of the coronavirus variant Omicron as it kept its main economic assessment steady and upgraded its outlook for industrial production, the Cabinet Office said on Tuesday.

"The cabinet noted a “the further increase in downside risks due to the effects of the novel Coronavirus and supply-side constraints and raw material prices” for now even as vaccination rates improve along with longer-term prospects for the economy.

On Monday, Tokyo and three surrounding prefectures looked to enforce stricter measures on social distancing and protocols as hospital cases rise.
