MNI BRIEF: BOJ Masai: Prolonged Policy; But Eye Side-Effects

TOKYO (MNI)

Bank of Japan board member Takako Masai said on Monday that easy policy will be prolonged further as more time was needed to meet the price target, but the side-effects needed careful monitoring. It will become increasingly important to discuss how to maintain the effects of monetary easing "while ensuring the sustainability of the policy, including in terms of increasing flexibility in ETF purchases and developing the market further," Masai told business leaders in Eastern Hokkaido via an online conference.

Masai was cautious on the outlook, although expected global trade to grow for now, as overall trends have been slowing, even before the Covid-19 outbreak."Indeed, Japan's export and production levels had already been on a downtrend prior to the outbreak, which I believe warrants attention," she said.
