MNI Policy: China to Restructure High-risk Fin'l Institutions

MNI (Beijing)
BEIJING (MNI) - China is studying ways to restructure high-risk financial
institutions this year, allowing some to "exit the market" while letting some to
be merged or bought out, Guo Shuqing, chairman of the China Banking and
Insurance Regulatory Commission, told reporters on Tuesday.
As a measure of China's push for supply-side reform, regulators will
identify and eliminate inefficiencies, Guo said on the sideline of the National
People's Congress.
Last year, regulators ordered banks to reorganize CNY1.96 trillion
non-performing loans, with half of that written off, Guo said.
