COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • For the second day in a row, the United States recorded over 100,000 new coronavirus cases in a 24 hour period. The November 5 total exceeded the previous day's by just under 20,000, coming in at 121,888 according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The average increase in new cases across the past week in the US stands at 94,626 per day, the highest on record, while fatalities from COVID-19 are also trending upwards. The US recorded 1,210 coronavirus-related fatalities in November 5, the highest one day total since September 15. The average daily increase in fatalities across the past week stands at 895 per day over the past seven days, the highest since August 31.
  • France registered 57,837 new COVID-19 cases on November 5, a record-high for a 24 hour period (larger new caseloads have been reported in the past, but these have covered registered cases for multiple days, primarily weekends). Comes as Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says that restrictions in the city will be tightened further, with some shops selling takeaway food and drink forced to close at 10pm.
  • Switzerland recorded its highest one-day new caseload of the pandemic so far, with 10,128 new cases added to the country's total on November 5. It marks the second consecutive day the country has recorded over 10,000 new cases in a single day. There has also been a notable uptick in fatalities, with an average of 61 coronavirus-related fatalities registered per day over the past week, the highest seven-day average on record.
