COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- The United States continues to record escalating numbers of new infections and fatalities from COVID-19, with the seven-day average of new cases hitting its highest level so far on October 28, with an average of 74,184 new cases registered per day over the past week. As election day fast approaches many states have registered record numbers of mail-in ballots and individuals seeking to vote early with the intention of avoiding contact with others that could spread COVID-19.
- In Russia, the Kremlin stated on October 29 that the country's healthcare system is under massive pressure, with the occupancy rate of beds in some regions above 90%. The seven-day average increase in cases and fatalities each hit record highs on October 28, with an average of 16,401 new cases and 281 fatalities recorded per day over the past week.
- The number of individuals in Belgium in intensive care due to COVID-19 stood at 993 on October 28, taking up half the country's total number of ICU beds. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the situation in the country is 'critical' in a nationwide address, with the situation in the healthcare sector so severe that doctors and nurses in the city of Liege who are confirmed as having coronavirus have been asked to continue working if they are not displaying symptoms of the virus.
