MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Greece Election Briefing

Greece holds its legislative election on 21 May, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis seeking a second term in office for his centre-right New Democracy party. However, a new purely proportional electoral system is set to almost eliminate the prospect of a single-party government and force parties into coalition negotiations. Greece is no longer the central focus of European financial markets as was the case in four elections from 2012 to 2015. Nevertheless, the country has been following a path back towards investment-grade status in recent years. As such, the outcome of the election will be watched to see if it is set to support this drive or potentially result in a fiscally expansive government that could see progress towards that target slow.

Within this election briefing we provide our Scenario Analysis on post-election outcomes, with assigned probabilities, followed by information on how the election works, the main parties running, and a chartpack of opinion polls.
