Executive summary:

  • Yesterday’s 40-year high inflation number will be the central political issue leading up to the midterms in November and Democrats should be concerned at a growing consensus amongst voters that the government doesn’t have an adequate plan in place. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell: ‘It’s the biggest issue in the country, and I think their biggest liability going into the fall.’
  • The Biden administration yesterday urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to end the ongoing trucker blockade which has forced auto plants on both sides of the border to shut down or roll back production.
  • The Ukraine crisis may delay the White House from releasing its National Security Strategy document for a second year running. The administration is required by law to release a NSS annually, but the complex geopolitical environment is hindering a long-term national security strategy.
  • President Biden has pledged to name a nominee for the Supreme Court by the end of the month and following a meeting Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee members and President Biden some have tipped Ketanji Brown Jackson as the current frontrunner for nomination.
