MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Week Ahead 17-23 October

All timings subject to change.

Monday 17 October:

  • United Kingdom: New Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt delivers a statement backtracking on almost all of the announcements made in the 23 September mini-budget by his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng. Hunt set to address the Commons at 1530BST (1030ET, 1630CET) following a statement earlier in the day. The government of PM Liz Truss remains under significant pressure, with poor polling for the governing centre-right Conservatives raising the prospect of a leadership challenge after just over a month in office.
  • European Union:EU foreign ministers meet in Luxembourg to hold talks on the situation in Ukraine as ‘kamikaze drone’ attacks continue on the capital, Kyiv. Ministers will also discuss the state of EU-China relations, the planned COP27 UN climate change summit, and the ongoing war in northern Ethiopia.
  • Sweden: Riksdag (parliament) voted on the minority coalition government comprising incoming PM Ulf Kristersson’s centre-right Moderates, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals. This government will be supported in a confidence and supply agreement by the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, the first time the party has been out of opposition.
