Monday 20 June:

  • European Union: Foreign Affairs Council meeting of EU foreign ministers takes place in Luxembourg. Ministers set to discuss the situation in Ukraine in light of the special European Council meeting in late May, as well as following the imposition of a sixth round of sanctions on Russia. Ministers also to discuss security in the Horn of Africa and EU-Egypt relations. High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell set to speak in presser following meeting at around 1630CET (1030ET, 1530BST).
  • Canada-US: Canadian Finance Minister and Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland hosts US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for a day of events and meetings. Joint presser set to take place around 1530ET (2030BST, 2130CET), with rising inflationary pressures facing households and business combined with a dour growth outlook set to be a prime topic of conversation.
  • European Parliament: Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of MEPs set to questions ECB president Christine Lagarde regarding the inflationary pressures facing the eurozone and the impact of the war in Ukraine on monetary policy. MEPs also set to vote on a report regarding Croatia’s progress towards fulfilling the criteria to join the euro. Session starts at 1500CET (0900ET, 1400BST), link to livestream here.
  • Australia-India: Australian Deputy PM and Defence Minister Richard Marles embarks on a four-day visit to India for talks with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh among others. New Australian government is attempting to boost cooperation with India to counter Chinese influence in Indo-Pacific. However, Australia’s hard-line stance against Russia unlikely to receive much backing from a more ambivalent New Delhi.
  • NATO: Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg hosts President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. The meeting comes as NATO seeks to reach an agreement between Turkey, and Sweden and Finland that could see the latter two join the alliance at next week’s leaders’ summit in Madrid.
  • United States, Argentina, Colombia: Public holidays for Juneteenth observance, Flag Day, and Corpus Christi respectively.
