MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Week Ahead 22-28 Nov

Executive Summary:

Monday 22 November:

  • European Union: European Parliament plenary session gets underway, but in a virtual format. In a late decision made on 19 November, the Parliament President David Sassoli stated that due to the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases across many EU member states, the meeting should not take place in Strasbourg as planned, but primarily by videoconference. Continues through to Thursday.
  • Canada:First parliamentary session due to take place since the general election in September. The House of Commons returns largely as it left, with a minority Liberal government under PM Justin Trudeau propped up on a vote-by-vote basis by other parties.
  • France-Belgium: French PM Jean Castex travels to Belgium for talks with his Belgian counterpart Alexander de Croo. Security issues are expected to be top of the agenda for the afternoon meeting.
  • Asia: Chinese President Xi Jinping chairs a virtual meeting to mark 30 years of dialogue between China and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN). China is ASEAN's largest trading partner, and vice-versa. The ASEAN group remains a crucial political actor in the region and globally. While the economies of all these nations are to an extent reliant on China, a number of the governments have expressed wariness regarding potential Chinese expansionism in the Asia-Pacific region.
