MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS - Week Ahead 26 Feb-3 March

(MNI) London – All timings subject to change.

Monday 26 February:

  • WTO:The biennial World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Conference (MC13) takes place in Abu Dhabi, running until 29 February. Ahead of the meeting of trade ministers from across the world, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that war, uncertainty, and instability are proving a drag on the global economy. The WTO remains hamstrung by its voting system, requiring positive consensus for new rules, and the economic fragmentation engendered by US-China rivalries, the war in Ukraine, and the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Ukraine:French President Emmanuel Macron to hold a working meeting of 20 European leaders and senior ministers in an effort to show resolve in support for Ukraine more than two years after the Russian invasion. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Dutch PM Mark Rutte, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez, and UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron expected to be in attendance. Meeting seen as unlikely to result in any new commitment to weapons provision to Kyiv, instead intended to facilitate discussions of how to improve coordination and assist Ukraine in repelling recent Russian advances.
