Vance and Walz hold VP debate, Sheinbaum takes over from AMLO as Mexico's president; UK's Starmer meets VdL in Brussels
(MNI) London – All timings are subject to change. Editor’s Note: The next Political Risk Week Ahead will be published on Monday 21 October.
Monday 30 September:
- United States: President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks regarding the federal response to Hurricane Helene, which has killed scores across the southeastern United States and is set to rack up a recovery bill in the billions of dollars. Biden is due to speak at around 1030ET. Republican candidate former President Donald Trump is set to visit the hard-hit city of Valdosta, GA.
- France: The trial of 27 figures from the far-right Rassemblement National (National Rally, RN), including party figurehead Marine Le Pen, gets underway. She and 26 others are accused of embezzling funds from the European Parliament between 2004 and 2016. Le Pen denies any wrongdoing, but if found guilty could (as well as massive fines and a custodial sentence) be barred from running for political office for five years. This would block her from contesting the 2027 presidential election, where she currently sits as the frontrunner according to opinion polling.
