MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Week Ahead 7-13 June

Monday 7 June:

  • European Union: European Parliament plenary session takes place from 7-10 June in Strasbourg, France. This is the first sitting held in the Alsatian city since before the pandemic in February 2020. MEPs face a busy sitting, with the EU's proposed Digital COVID-19 Certificate, the potential waiving of patents on COVID-19 vaccines, reactions to Belarus' forced landing of a Ryanair flight in May, and reaction to the EU Council and G7 summits all on the agenda.
  • NATO:Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visits Washington, D.C. for talks with President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. According to a White House statement, Biden and Stoltenberg will discuss "burden sharing, cyberattacks, climate change, and "challenges" from Russia and China" as preparations are made for the NATO summit in Brussels, Belgium on 14 June that Biden is due to attend.
  • Asia:China hosts an ASEAN-China foreign ministers' meeting, as well as a Lancang-Mekong Cooperation foreign minsters' meeting in Chongqing municipality. Event runs from 7-8 June. Event marks 30 years since the establishment of talks between China and the Association of South East Asian Nations. Talks set to focus on COVID-19 recovery, while the military coup in Myanmar and broader regional relations also likely to feature prominently.
  • China:Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress holds its 29th session from 7-10 June in Beijing. The senior decision-making body within the NPC due to discuss laws regarding data security, as well as a report on the final government accounts for 2020.
  • UK (Scotland):COVID-19 restrictions reduced further in more sparsely populated north and south of the country, with level 1 rules allowing for indoor mixing of 3 households and hospitality allowed to remain open until 11pm. Densely populated central belt of the country, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, remain in tighter level 2 restrictions.
