Monday 7 November:

  • United Nations: The UN Climate Change Conference, better known as COP27, gets underway in earnest in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Main conference concludes on 8 November, but other events continue throughout the week. Major annual event seen as a crucial attempt to get leaders to commit to binding and effective targets on combating global warming. US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Indian PM Narendra Modi, and Brazilian President-Elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva all expected to be in attendance.
  • Eurozone: Eurogroup meeting of eurozone finance ministers takes place in Brussels. Talks to focus on draft budgets submitted by member states, the EU’s fiscal response to high energy prices. New Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Georgetti is also set to present the policy priorities of the new Italian government. Eurogroup comes a day ahead of the ECOFIN meeting of all EU finance ministers on 8 November. Major topic of discussion there includes the US Inflation Reduction Act that has led to significant opprobrium from European finance ministries for its alleged anti-competitive nature.
