Monday 9 January:

  • United States: Following the election of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker of the House of Representatives early on 7 January, the House will vote on 9 January on the rules package put forward by McCarthy in order to win enough support from Trumpist House Freedom caucus members to gain the speaker’s gavel. While the rules package is expected to be approved, there is the tail-risk that moderate GOP representatives vote against the package due to the sizeable concessions McCarthy gave to Republican hold-outs during the 15 rounds of voting required for his election. Also on 9 January, the Republican Steering Committee is set to meet to finalise committee assignments and chairs.
