  • United States: House of Representatives set to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Process follows a set of ceremonial rules, with impeachment 'managers' appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi walking to the Senate to 'exhibit' the article of impeachment and trigger a trial that could result in former President Donald Trump being barred from running for public office in the future.
  • European Union: Foreign Affairs Council meeting of EU foreign ministers takes place in Brussels. Topics of discussion to include the detention of Alexei Navalny in Russia and the potential for related sanctions, transatlantic relations following the inauguration of President Biden, EU-UK cooperation, climate diplomacy, and the sharing of vaccines outside the EU. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi expected to join via videolink.
  • Global: World Economic Forum meeting takes place virtually. Usually held in the Swiss town of Davos, the WEF has moved online this year due to the pandemic. Chinese President Xi Jinping speaks at 1300CET (0700ET, 1200GMT, 2000HKT). Panel on 'Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis' including director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr Anthony Fauci, at 1415CET (0815ET, 1315GMT, 2115HKT). UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres speaks at 1800CET (1200ET, 1700GMT, 0100HKT).
