MNI POLITICAL RISK - Biden To Unveil New China Tariffs Today

US
  • MNI London: President Biden will today formally unveil a sweeping set of new tariffs on Chinese imports. The measures, which include new or increased levies on steel, aluminium, electric vehicles, semiconductors, batteries, solar cells, critical minerals, port cranes, and medical products, follow a lengthy USTR review which concluded that all Trump-era 301 tariffs should remain in place.
  • Although widely expected, the move raises the prospect of retaliatory actions from Beijing and represents something of a hawkish pivot from the Biden administration, which had teased the possibility of removing some tariffs to cool inflation as recently as summer 2023.
  • The House Rules Committee will today consider a raft on messaging legislation designed to apply pressure on vulnerable Democrats with tricky votes on Israel and border security.
  • Secretary of Statement Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv today for an unannounced trip to coincide with the arrival of the first new package of US military aid for Ukraine since Congressional approval last month.
  • Maryland Democrats will today vote in a primary election to decide their nominee to face former Maryland governor Larry Hogan (R) in November - a surprise competitive race which could upend the battle for control of the Senate.
  • Industry trade group Airlines for America and airlines have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Transportation in protest of a fee disclose rule the Biden administration announced last month as part of its ‘junk fees’ crackdown.
  • Poll of the Day: President Biden’s approval rating has slumped again.
