by Tom Lake

COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • Iran registered 3,822 new COVID-19 cases on October 11, meaning the country now has recorded in excess of half a million cases. After suppressing the growth rate throughout the summer, the country has recorded a slow but sustained growth in new cases acoss the past month and a half, with the rate of fatalities also moving in a sustained upward trajectory. The partial lockdown in the capital, Tehran, has been extended to October 16, while the wearing of facemasks outside is now mandatory across the city.
  • Russia registered a record increase in cases on October 11, with 13,442 added to the total. This is the third consecutive day of record new case increases in Russia. While the Kremlin maintains that Russia is on course to develop the first effective COVID-19 vaccine, some in the West have claimed the country is disseminating untruths about COVID-19 vaccines to undermine Western cohesion. UK Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Sir Nick Carter made the allegations in a speech to the Policy Exchange think tank on September 30.
  • The United States recorded its highest weekend COVID-19 new caseload since August 8-9 over the past weekend. The combined new case total of 99,253 from the weekend of October 10-11 was last exceeded on the weekend of August 8-9, when 101,813 new cases were added to the total. Weekend new caseloads often come in much lower than those on weekdays due to discrepancies in how different states record data as well as the reduced number of tests taken and processed on these days.
