MNI POLITICAL RISK: Long-Term Timetable Highlights Nature Of Brexit As A Process Not An Event

A chart put out yesterday by Prof. Simon Usherwood, a politics lecturer and Brexit expert at the University of Surrey, highlights the nature of Brexit as a multi-year ongoing process and not a single event that took place on 31 Jan 2019 or 31 Dec 2020.

  • The chart highlights the four major areas that will see continued timetabled interactions between the UK and EU in the years ahead: grace periods, transitional arrangements, negotiations, and reviews.
  • As can be seen on the chart, areas relating to negotiations of fishing quotas and reviews of the Northern Ireland protocol are set to continue indefinitely, while even those agreements set as 'transitional' are due to continue until 2028 (in relation to citizens rights).
  • Any disagreements arising from any of these highly contentious areas (including fisheries and the NI border) could have notable impacts on EU-UK relations and trade over the coming years.
