MNI PRESS: Tokyo Hits Record High 280+ Covid-19 Cases: Media

MNI (London)
TOKYO (MNI) - Tokyo will record more than 280 cases OF Covid-19 on the day,
the highest number yet, local media reported Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Yuriko
Koike saying Thursday.
The previous high was 243 cases on July 10 and Tokyo confirmed 165 cases on
Wednesday, the seventh day in a row with over 100 cases. The surge of infections
could prompt the government to postpone a Japanese campaign to promote domestic
travel.
The Go To Travel promotion, which planned to start on July 22, subsidizes
half of travel expenses for domestic trips, with a cap of JPY20,000 per night
per traveller.
The government originally planned an August launch, then pushed the date
forward to help revive Japan's pandemic-hit economy.
Koike said on Wednesday, "I hope the government rethinks when and how to
implement the campaign in light of current infection levels."
The Tokyo metropolitan government on Wednesday urged residents not to
travel at this time.
