MNI: The U.S. Department of Commerce said Friday it will be enacting new
measures to counter Huawei's circumvention of U.S. export controls, launching a
long-expected loophole closure that is likely to prompt a backlash from China.
- Commerce's Bureau of Industry Security is updating its foreign-produced direct
product rule and Entity List to target Huawei's semiconductor acquisition using
U.S. software and tech via offshore companies.
- U.S. chip technology destined for use by Huawei will now require special
licensing
- Commerce extended for a final time the 90-day renewal of the Temporary General
License for Huawei, which allows U.S. citizens "to continue to temporarily
operate such devices and existing networks while hastening the transition to
alternative suppliers."
