Moscow-Talks On New START Nuclear Treaty This Year Unlikely

Wires carrying comments from the Russian Foreign Ministry, stating that Moscow 'had no other choice' than to stop talks on an extension of the New START treaty on nuclear arms limitations. Also states that they 'do not believe' talks on New START will resume this year and that there is no sign the US is ready to resume talks on 'strategic stability'.

  • Russia's state-run Intefax carries comments from the Foreign Ministry: "The US insisted primarily on the issue of renewed inspections, while Moscow had other priorities". RIA reports Foreign Ministry stating that Russia and the US have 'a deep disconnect' about the implementation of the New START treaty.
  • New START treaty is currently due to expire on 5 Feburary 2026, meaning there remains time for a deal to be reached although there will clearly be calls for an agreement sooner rather than later to avoid a last-minute rush that could see the deal fall by the wayside.
  • New START limits the number of nuclear warheads the US and Russia can deploy, as well as capping the number of ICBM launchers, submarine-based missile launchers, and heavy bombers each side can have at 800.
