N. Korea Holds Military Parade For 75th Anniversary Of Its Army

North Korea has staged a military parade on the 75th anniversary of the founding of its army, Yonhap News Agency reports citing an anonymous source.

  • The event reportedly started at 20:00 local time (11:00GMT) on Wednesday and was in progress when the Yonhap piece first crossed the wires minutes ago.
  • It is unknown if Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un attends the parade, but Yonhap points out that he participated in 11 out of 12 military parades since taking office.
  • Kim was seen participating in the commemoration of the army's anniversary held in the headquarters of military commanders the day before.
  • The South Korean news agency notes that over 22,000 people have been mobilised for the parade and flags the possibility of new weapons being showcased today.
  • "An object that appeared to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-17 was captured during the recent rehearsal" for the parade.
  • North Korea is expected to release official comments and broadcast the recording of the parade on state TV on Thursday morning.
