N. Korea Says Kim Inspected Artillery Drill, South Vows To Boost Deterrence Capabilities

NORTH KOREA

North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a "fire assault drill," the country's state-owned KCNA agency reported, as South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol vowed to boost Seoul's deterrence capabilities.

  • North Korean state media said that Kim attended military exercises intended to prepare the army for an "actual war" and "gave field guidance to the Hwasong artillery unit charged with important operational task of the Korean People's Army."
  • Worth noting that Kim's daughter Ju-ae also attended the "field guidance." The presence of another member of the Kim dynasty might suggest that the regime was trying to strengthen the message sent by the drill.
  • Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said that his country will tighten military cooperation with the U.S. to boost deterrence against North Korean nuclear and missile threats. The two countries will hold large-scale military drills next week.
