NATGAS: Transit Expiry May See Modest Boost to Joint EU Gas Buying: Montel

NATGAS

The looming end of Russian transit flows via Ukraine could trigger some heightened activity o the EU’s joint gas-buying platform, AggregateEU, analysts told Montel, but any increase is likely to be negligible.

  • The end of Russian transit flows via Ukraine could encourage the buyers affected to up their activity on AggregateEU, although they may find it as easy, or easier, to procure spot gas directly from EU hubs themselves,” said Jake Horslen, senior analyst at Energy Aspects.
  • Horslen does not any dramatic increase in volumes procured via AggregateEU.
  • Europe will lose around 14 bcm/y, or 3% of demand, when the Ukraine transit deal expires at the end of December.
  • The AggregateEU platform was introduced in 2022. An FT report found that while the platform had matched buyers and sellers for 43 bcm of demand, just 2% of this total had ultimately been contracted and reported to the commission.
