National Assembly Rejects Section 89 Panel Report On Phala Phala Scandal

SOUTH AFRICA

Just five ANC lawmakers defected and voted in favour of launching an impeachment case against President Cyril Ramaphosa based on the Section 89 panel report, while several more were absent.

  • Given the ANC's 230-seat majority in the 400-seat parliament, a defection of 31 lawmakers was needed for the motion to pass. Even if all opposition MPs vote "yes" now, the report will not be approved.
  • Among notable absentees were Zweli Mkhize, Ramaphosa's rival in the party leadership race, and Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu. It was earlier reported that Sisulu was among the most vocal opponents of party discipline in the vote, alongside Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma (voted "yes").
