Nationalist FPO Challenge For Top Spot In Polls For 1st Time Since 2017

AUSTRIA

Latest nationwide opinion polling shows that right-wing nationalist Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) challenging for first place in opinion polls for the first time since 2017. The next election is not due until 2024 at the latest, but based on these figures the FPO could seek to lead the next gov't propped up by the centre-right Austria People's Party (OVP).

  • IFDD: Social Democrats (SPO): 27% (-1), FPÖ: 25% (+1), ÖVP: 20% (-3), Greens: 11% (+1), NEOS: 11% (+1), 1,250 respondents, Fieldwork 26-28 Oct, chgs w/14 Oct.
  • Market-Lazarsfeld: FPO: 26% (+1), SPO: 26% (-1), OVP: 21% (-1), Greens: 11% (+1), NEOS: 11% (+1), 2,000 respondents. Fieldwork 17-25 Oct, chgs w/19 Oct.
  • The OVP of Chancellor Karl Nehammer currently governs in coalition with the environmentalist Greens. The party's support has failed to recover from the scandal that brought down former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in 2021.
  • FPO one of the parties most vocal in its preference for maintaining strict Austrian neutrality vis-a-vis Russia. Should the party end up back in gov't it could result in a less united European front against Moscow depending on the situation of the war at that point in time.
