NCCC to Discuss Expanding Vaccinations to 18-35s Ahead of Schedule

  • National Coronavirus Command Council expected to discuss opening up vaccines for over 18s at its meeting today vs prior date of 1 Sept.
    • Follows calls from HealthMin Phaahla yesterday RE allowing access to vaccines by the end of the week. Health dept says it is concerned by a slowdown in the numbers coming for vaccines.
    • Private vaccination centres now allow walk-ins for eligible people to get the jab, while some government-run centres also encourage people to walk in.
    • Phaahla believes starting earlier will allow the vaccination programme to regain momentum
  • Ramaphosa extends deployment of 10,000 SANDF troops until mid-September, to continue work with police to maintain law and order and combat crime at a cost of R255m.
    • 25,000 SANDF troops and admin staff were initially deployed from 12 July -12 Aug to help restore order in the wake of rioting, looting and arson in KZN and parts of Gauteng
  • SA reports 7,983 new covid cases & 299 deaths
