NDP Leader-'Election Now More Likely Than Before'

CANADA

Wires carrying comments from Jagmeet Singh, leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP). Singh says that following his party's withdrawal from a confidence and supply agreement with PM Justin Trudeau's Liberals "an election is now more likely than before".

  • Singh says his party would "look at every confidence vote in the Liberal gov't and see what is in the interest of Canadians".
  • As we noted earlier (see "CANADA: Trudeau Gov't On Thin Ice After NDP Withdraws From C&S Agreement", 1035BST), should the NDP and main opposition Conservatives vote against the Trudeau gov't in a confidence motion the Quebec-interest Bloc Quebecois would be in the position to cast the deciding votes.
