Netanyahu To Democracy Summit-Broad Consensus On Reforms Possible

ISRAEL

Speaking at the US-organised 'Summit for Democracy', Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu states that he believes "It is possible to achieve a broad national consensus over judicial reforms." On the US-Israeli relationship says that "The alliance between the world's greatest democracy and a strong, proud and independent democracy, Israel, in the Middle East, is unshakable. Nothing can change that." This comment comes in the wake of US President Joe Biden calling for Netanyahu to 'walk away' from the reforms (for more info see0931BST bullet).

  • Netanyahu: ""Israel is undergoing... a very intensive public debate. But I want to assure you... Israel was, is and will always remain a proud, strong and vibrant democracy as a beacon of liberty and shared prosperity in the heart of Middle East."
  • The delay to the implementation of the reforms has seen opposition and gov't figures engaging in talks moderated by President Isaac Herzog, but protests continue in Tel Aviv. Protesters calling for the reforms to be completely junked rather than simply delayed until the summer.
