Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to hold a rare press conference at 2015 local time (1315ET, 1815BST, 1915CET) following two days of protest and a general strike following the recovery of the bodies of six hostages held by Hamas since the 7 October attacks. Since those attacks, Netanyahu has very rarely taken questions from domestic reporters, instead favouring direct addresses to the population or talking to foreign press. It remains to be seen whether he takes questions tonight or only reads from a prepared statement.
- The PM has been criticised by some for acting as an obstacle to a hostages-for-Gaza ceasefire deal. Earlier, US President Joe Biden responded in the negative when asked if he thought Netanyahu was doing enough to reach a deal.
- Wires reported an unnamed Hamas official saying that the group 'will respond positively to a proposal that can secure a permanent Gaza ceasefire and full withdrawal of Israeli forces'. Claims that Biden's comments 'are US recognition that Netanyahu undermined ceasefire efforts'.
