New York Special Election Could Provide Bellwether For General Election

US

A new poll from Emerson College has found that Democrats are slightly favoured to retake the New York Congressional seat of expelled former Republican George Santos in a special election on February 13.

  • Emerson: “45% of voters support Democrat Tom Suozzi, 42% support Republican Mazi Pilip, and 5% plan to vote for someone else. Nine percent are undecided ahead of the February special election…”
  • The Hill notes: “How Democrats fare in the Feb. 13 contest could signal how strong the party will be in the fall, when its efforts to flip the lower chamber hinge largely on New York.”
  • Reminder, New York saw a mini 'red wave' in 2022 which delivered the GOP a net gain of three seats in the state - One of the strongest Republicans performances at the midterms.
  • Any analysis on the special election as a foreshadow of House dynamics in November should be caveated by noting that Santos' numerous scandals elicited particularly strong animosity amongst his electorate. This ill will may be reflected in lukewarm support for Pilip.
