NI Leaders Dismiss PM Johnson's Efforts To Renew Power-Sharing Executive

Lisa O'Carroll at the Guardian tweets comments from both main Northern Ireland party leaders following meetings with UK PM Boris Johnson,

  • "[Sinn Fein NI leader] Mary Lou McDonald after meeting w Boris Johnson "We did not manage to convince some of the error of his ways but be v, v clear we will persist on these matters" - Would Johnson "for one minute" accept a party in London tel families "to struggle on" cos they held a "veto" on forming govt[?]."
  • "[DUP leader] Sir Jeffrey Donaldson after meeting with Boris Johnson “impossible for power-sharing to operate”. complained that PM took two years to even get to action. “The time for talking is over. The time is for action”.
  • Johnson in Northern Ireland attempting to encourage unionists to allow Northern Ireland assembly to sit (DUP won't vote for Speaker, therefore assembly cannot convene), and for the party to join the power-sharing executive (the regional devolved gov't). UK gov't has hinted at disapplying parts of NI protocol, EU warning UK against unilateral moves on the protocol.
  • Irish Taoiseach (PM) Micheal Martin tweets: "Good phone call with European Council Pres. Charles Michel today. We both agreed the only way forward on the Protocol is through substantive talks between the EU and UK. Any unilateral action is damaging and cannot help."
