No Coreper Today As Divisions Remain Over Russia Oil Cap & Industrial Plans

Earlier, Politico confirmed that there will be no Coreper meeting of EU permanent representatives due to evident divisions on a number of issues including the incoming cap on Russian oil product prices and the Commission's Green Deal Industrial Plan.

  • Politico: "The Swedish presidency of the Council of the EU has canceled today’s planned meeting of EU ambassadors [...] despite the fact the Coreper has lots to mull over in the lead-up to next week’s European Council. Disagreement 1: EU countries are still divided on a price cap for Russian oil products and a new sanctions package against Belarus [...]. The talks between the EU ambassadors have now been postponed until Friday, with diplomats seeking a compromise in the meantime. As the clock is ticking for a deal on oil, one possibility is to negotiate that first, and return to Belarus later.
  • Politico: "Disagreement 2: The European Commission’s initiative for a green industrial plan will be subject to fierce debate between EU countries, many reluctant about the proposed relaxation of state aid restrictions [...]. But as it was unclear when EU ambassadors could expect a new version of the draft Council conclusions, the Swedes decided to cancel today’s meeting."
