No Sign Of Labor Slowdown In Weekly Claims

  • Initial claims were surprisingly low in the week to Jan 14, coinciding with payrolls reference week, falling from 205k to 190k (cons 214k) for a joint low from Sep 23 and before that April.
  • It pushes 4-week average down 7k to 206k, also the lowest since late September.
  • Separately, there was a minor blip from continuing claims edged 17k higher to 1647k but they remain below the 2019 average as a sign of a still very tight labor market.
