No Sign Of Terrorist Act In Suleimani Killing-Governor

IRAN

Sina Toossi at the Center for International Policy think tank on the killing of prominent cleric Ayatollah Abbas Ali Suleimani: "Iranian media say the attacker has been arrested & 3 others were injured in the incident. Mahmoud Hosseini-Pour, the governor of the province where the attack took place, has said, "The motive of the attacker is not yet clear, but preliminary investigations indicate that this was not a terrorist act." From 2001 to 2019, Suleimani was representative (Friday Prayer leader) of Supreme Leader Khamenei in Sistan & Baluchestan province. This province is home to the marginalized Baluchi minority & has witnessed frequent anti-gov protests since last year in the wake of the Mahsa Amini uprising."

  • The killing of senior Iranian officials can see spikes in regional and international political risk, with the assassination of Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani by the US on the order of then-President Donald Trump at the start of 2020 significantly increasing tensions in the Middle East.
