Non-Partisan Watchdog Accuses Santos Of Campaign Finance Violation

US

The US Federal Election Commission has filed a complaint accusing freshman House Representative George Santos (R-NY) of a range of campaign finance violations.

  • According to the Washington Post, the alleged wrongdoing includes "masking the true source of his campaign’s funding, misrepresenting his campaign’s spending and using campaign resources to cover personal expenses."
  • Santos has admitted to fabricating large portions of his personal and professional history and has come under pressure from Democrats and moderate Republicans to resign his seat in Congress.
  • The mounting pressure on Santos is an additional headache for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who controls a razor thin majority in the House and is facing two years leading a fractious Republican caucus which is already beholden to a small group of conservatives Reps who extracted a range of concessions from McCarthy in return for his election to Speaker of the House of Representatives.
  • The complaint reads: “Particularly in light of Santos’s mountain of lies about his life and qualifications for office, the Commission should thoroughly investigate what appear to be equally brazen lies about how his campaign raised and spent money."
  • Santos is also subject to a separate investigation in Brazil over alleged fraud.
