Norway Monitor Balticconnector Probe Amid Energy Security Concern

NATURAL GAS

Speculation of sabotage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline is increasing concern for energy infrastructure security again after concerns were raised following the Nord Stream damage in September 2022. The pipeline between Finland and Estonia went offline on Sunday following a leak most likely caused by mechanical force rather than an explosion with repair works expected to last until April.

  • Norway is closely monitoring the progress of an investigation into the unexplained pipeline damage according to Reuters. "We are now in close dialogue with the relevant security authorities and are following the situation closely to assess relevant security measures," said a spokesperson for Gassco.
  • There have been no reported incidents in Norway, the spokesperson added.
  • Norwegian police patrols around onshore installations including the Mongstad oil terminal and Kollsnes and Kaarstoe gas processing plants have been increased.
