Norway Was Germany’s Largest Gas Supplier, Replaces Russia In 2022

The share of Russian gas imports to Germany fell to 22% in 2022, marking Norway as Germany’s largest natural gas supplier with a share of 33% last year, Bnetza data show.

  • Germany imported a total of 1,449TWh of natural gas last year, compared with 1,652TWh in 2021.
  • Gas imports from Russia fell by 30 percentage points on the year to a share of 22%, while Norway’s exports stepped up to a share of 33%.
  • Germany’s gas exports to neighbouring countries fell to 501TWh in 2022, compared with 749TWh the year prior.
  • Germany’s gas consumption last year stood 14% below the four-year average, with a 15% decline in industrial consumption and a 12% decline in household demand compared with the average.
  • The decline in gas consumption was mainly due to milder weather.
