Norwegian Hydro Stocks Fell First Time in Four Months

ELECTRICITY

Norwegian hydropower reserves declined for the first time since early May last week to 78.7% of capacity as of 5 September, down by 0.6 percentage points on the week, NVE data showed.

  • Hydro stocks also narrowed the surplus to the five-year average to 4.82 percentage points, down from 5.10 percentage points the week prior but still well above levels seen so far this year.
  • Hydropower output from reservoirs last week was down by 324MW on the week to 12.87GW, Entso-E data showed, but limited precipitations weighed on inflows into reserves. Forecasts suggest low precipitation for this week, which could further weigh on stockbuild.
  • Latest forecasts suggest a small upward revision in onshore wind forecasts for this week to 793MW to 1.11GW during base-load hours, however, wind output still remains seasonally low.
